Deon’s Story: What does 2015 hold for Deon?
This year will be exciting! The idea of a triathlon came up and my first thought was: No ways! It will mean that I have to run. Running was never a good idea for me. But then I thought: well … I do have two legs, two feet and they move, which means that it possible! During the holiday I started running and swimming. Rochelle is helping me with an exercise program for running and cycling. I have no clue how to get myself fit for swimming, but I’m doing my best. I am looking for a swimming coach. Swimming has its own special technique and I need help learning it. I also need a specialised program to help me train.
Sunday I did my first cycling race of 2015. I underestimated myself by entering for the sixty kilometre event. The distance I trained for over the holiday was twenty kilometres. I thought that the sixty would be easy. Right from the start I saw that I would be the last one to arrive at the finish line. I wanted to give up after the first few kilometres but then a thought came to me: you might be last, but you are still part of the race – this motivates me to finish all my races even though I might be last.
Training will now become my full time occupation and I’m looking forward to it. Ever since I was a little boy I didn’t liked sport because I wasn’t good at it. Little did I know what a huge impact it would have on my life and also the lives of other.
Looking at my circumstances and what I want to achieve might be unrealistic. But I keep on thinking about the words of Nelson Mandela:
“It seems impossible until it’s done.”
