Drawing Close

Race day is drawing near.  I can feel my nerves come alive when I look at the calendar.  One thing that calms me is the fact that I’m fit and ready to take it on!

From now till race day I’m not allowed to do heavy training.  Rochelle said that my body will need rest to build up strength.  If I do cycle, it will only be for short distances, about twenty or thirty kilometers a day.

On Saturday I wanted to go for my last long distance ride, but as I crossed the last stop street, I felt something in me say clearly: ‘do not go on the road today!’  At first I thought it was just my emotions playing tricks on me.  I parked my car and thought the feeling would go away and I could still go out.  But everything in me kicked against that thought so I turned around and came back home.
Later in the day we did have storms, but that didn’t bother me. When I visited my brother, he told me that the road was very busy and that people were driving recklessly.  From experience, I know that on Saturdays all the roads are busier than usual.

I would never know why I had to turn around.  As I thought about this, I realised that I needed to take extra care of myself.  I would be so disappointed if I came down with flu, or fell and broke an arm or leg.  In other words, right now it’s a good idea not to cycle on busy days or in the rain.  I should also have a light sports jacket nearby so that I won’t catch a cold.
