Learn more about the newest member of our blog family

Good News!! Our blog family is growing, so it is my pleasure to introduce you to our newest member…Heather!

Hi everyone, I am 28 years old and have bipolar disorder. I’ve been with Dr Jerrie Bezuidenhout for the past 10 years. There have been many ups and also many downs but I’ve been relatively stable on my meds for the past 10 months or so. I’m a qualified teacher. Holding down a job has been a challenge for me due to my illness but hoping this year is better. I wish to inspire others to keep pushing on, even when times are tough. There is always a rainbow after the storm. Even though sometimes it’s hard to imagine. I look forward to sharing my experiences and ideas with you, so without further ado here is what I have to say about this month’s Happiness HELPS theme of LEARN…

Learning is an integral part of everyday life…

As babies, we learn to crawl, walk and talk. As we grow into independent beings, we learn many other skills that help us to figure out how to handle situations we are faced with.

Often, the learning process is subconscious and goes unnoticed.

However, sometimes we find ourselves in places where we need to consciously learn a new set of skills to succeed. This is evident when starting a new job or when faced with undesirable conflict. Learning new skills is what keeps us afloat in the turbulent waters of life.

Learning is often seen in a negative light. Especially when it comes to exams or assignments or when the lesson being learnt is a difficult one.

What if learning on a conscious level was fun? Would more people be willing to learn?

It the answer to the former question is simply that learning can be exciting and should be enjoyed for the enhancement of life. Learning something that doesn’t necessarily have to be learnt is rewarding and greatly increases confidence and boosts one’s mood. New ways to learn skills that are fun and rewarding can take place anywhere. How about learning a new recipe that is maybe healthy and tasty? What about learning to greet another person in their own language, thus making them smile? Learning how to create something special from old photos? How about getting active and learning a new sport and in doing that, making new friends?Being more patient and kind to those close to you and others?

There are hundreds of ways one can learn something new to benefit them and others. Think creatively and passionately. Use talents that are given, or find new ones. There are so many learning opportunities in a day and using even one of those opportunities can brighten a smile.

That said, I personally find my joy in reading new books or in deep conversation. Even these small things create opportunities for me to learn and I do enjoy them so. Often I find myself in a place where even getting out of bed is difficult, but I find solace in the fact that getting up is learning and that learning is one of life’s priceless gifts.
