The enemy of many
We live in a world full of pain, illness and heart break. No literally heart break as in heart disease, but over the past decade people have become more aware of their heart health and just more aware of their health in general, however I deal with a silent killer everyday one that people are not so open to talk about…….Mood disorders. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) there are 380 million people suffering from depression. Depression affects people from all walks of life and has a profound affect on all aspects of the sufferers life. Depression is an enemy of many and I think it is time we get to know the enemy.
WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
Depression is classified as a mood disorder. Mood disorders are not chosen and are an illness. Depression is a severe, disabling condition that has a profound effect on all aspects of a sufferer`s life, as it affects thoughts, mood, feelings behaviour, and physical health.
Depression is viewed as an illness that is caused by changes in neurotransmitters in the limbic system of the brain. These changes can be triggered by numerous factors.
SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION:
- Physical
– Sweaty palms
– Muscle and joint pain
– Headaches
– Change in appetite
– Weight loss or gain
- Emotional
– Persistent feelings of sadness
– Irritability
– Anxiety/ Agitation
– Guilt
– Low self-esteem
– Aggression
– Hopelessness
– Irritability
– Persistent sad, anxious or hopeless mood
- Thoughts
– Difficulty with concentration or making decisions
– Negative
– Suicidal
– Recurring thoughts of death
– Feelings of guilt
- Drives
– Tiredness and lack of energy
– Lethargic
– Loss of interest or enjoyment in normal daily activities
– Withdrawal
– Low sex drive
