People may forget what you have said or even what you have done, but they will never forget how you made them feel! This has not rung any truer on any other day than what it does today on Mandela Day. It is wonderful and noble to help others as is the spirit of Mandela day, but think for a moment which version of you will be able to sustain helping others, the rundown, burnt out, depressed, tired you or the happy, balanced, healthy, vibrant you?
Obviously the latter. We need to distinguish between being selfish and self-preservation. In so many instances people suffering from psychiatric illnesses believe that they have nothing left to give or are just honestly too tired to give. For those who feel this way celebrate your 67min for Mandela by reaching out to others that might feel the same and letting them know that even under that blanket of depression they and you are worth a lot more than you think and have a lot to give.
