FIFTH!

Last week, I decided to enter a forty kilometre cycling race which took place this past Sunday.  It was easy to train for and I didn’t foresee any problem for Sunday.  On Saturday night, I was confident about the race.

I decided to put all my muscle power into the race. When I turned around I noticed that I was struggling and wondered why.  Then I remembered my own words in my book: when your focus is divided between two thoughts, both are being neglected!  I was thinking about other things when my focus should have been on the race.  When I focused, it became easier and I even caught up with the two guys in front of me.

At the end of each race, volunteers come up to you to give you your medal and ask your race number.  Obviously, they keep record to see who came in and where the person lays is ranked in their category.  I never asked them before, but I thought I would ask, for a change.  First, I asked them how many people entered and a lady replied: ‘Thirty cyclists, and you came in fifth.’  I looked at her as if she was asking me if the sky was blue.  ‘Huh?’ ‘What?’  I didn’t understand. So I asked her the same question a second time and got the same answer.  I could not believe this.  Before I left I went to her again and I got the same answer a third time!

Me?  Fifth out of thirty cyclists?  I am so proud of myself.  I never thought that I could come this close to first place.

I have entered for a duathlon in Germiston this coming Sunday.  Knowing what I achieved in the cycle race motivated me to train with a joyful heart and I will compete with a big smile!
