Depression and spirituality?
Depression is an illness that impacts on all aspects of a sufferer’s life and so often we want to belief that there is a quick fix out there, I mean if depression is an illness then it has a biological component so just treat that component and bam Bob’s you uncle. However, depression affects us on a biological, psychological, social and spiritual level, affecting functioning in all areas of life, so unfortunately no quick fixes sold here.
The good thing however is that because depression has such a profound affect there have been many new developments with the treatment of this illness, more effective pharmacological intervention, psychologist doing more psychosocial research regarding this, so many campaigns trying to prevent stigma. However the one thing many struggle with when they are in the grips of a depression is their spiritual aspects, their relationship with their God (this is a touchy and very difficult subject on the best of times, now adding a mood disorder on top of that….geesh). Unfortunately the reason there are so many question is because people find it hard to give answers. These questions sometimes feel like they are going to rip us apart…Why me?, Where was God?, What did I do to disserve this?
This is our human mind trying to make sense of a traumatic event, but has God really forsaken us???????
