Spirituality and Depression
Today’s group was the spiritual aspects of anxiety and yesterday’s blog just kept on popping in to my head. People asked the same questions again and again…why me, why is God punishing me??
The truth is God is not punishing us!!! Bad things happen to us because we live in a bad world, we live in a sin filled world and the choices of others have the power to hurt us in the worst possible ways. What we need to address is our view of God.
If you view God as a God who is just waiting for you to step out of line to punish you, you will have a negative view of yourself and the world, which will most likely cause your depression to escalate. However, if you view God as a source of strength and rely on the many promises we find in scripture it will give you the strength to move forward in the darkest of days.
Today I used the example of an angry teenager who has locked herself in her room (we have all been there), angry at mom and dad for some reason. Thinking back to my teenage years I did exactly the some and even though I got so angry and yelled out the most hurtful things my parents never left me. I always wanted them to come in and fix the problem, I wanted them to change it but, then I realised I was in control of the door…..I have to let them in.
Don’t be that teenager let God in.
