The force of habit

We live in a world that is governed by forces, fundamental forces like gravitational, electromagnetic and nuclear, but I have to say the strongest force I have encountered is the force………..of habit. Today as I was driving to work I realised I need to stop to put petrol in my car, so throughout my day I constantly had to remind myself to stop for petrol at my petrol station ……wait, what?? MY petrol station…and that was the problem, I mean on my way to work and on my way home I pass 3 petrol stations so why do I need to stop at that one?

The universal habit

Let us talk  about the most universal habit none of us seem to be able to break……..NEGATIVE THINKING. Telling you to just stop thinking negatively is much easier said than done however, something interesting about thoughts you might not have know is that we always move towards our thoughts and never away from them…..so if you think today is going to be a bad day it most probably will be a bad day as you will only focus on the things that make this day bad. This is exactly what happened to me this morning, I got stuck in traffic (people forget how to drive when one traffic light is not working), when I got to the office my email account wanted me to carry out something close to circus tricks so it can update, I had to rewrite this post 3 times as it did not want to do anything it was told to and it is not even 8 yet.

Ending off the week…

Something very interesting a learned today is never say never, I will tell you more about that next week, but for now just some feedback on my thinking positive challenge. It was very hard I have to admit, but I did it, I was able to change my attitude towards the week (yes, admittedly this only happened yesterday, so I don’t know if I was succeeding or if it was the fact that it is Thursday that got me in a better mood) none the less I will continue with this and keep you up to date. Please let me know of your progress and things that help you make the bad days good. Have a good weekend and remember……..

Small victories

Thank goodness for small victories….for the past few months I have been writing my thesis and boy does it take everything out of you. But today I submitted my third chapter and even though I still have so much work ahead of me, getting this done just felt like a mountain off my shoulders.

This is how I got today’s topic, small victories…..

The earthquake

There is of course no way we can ignore the hottest topic in south Africa right now…yes the earthquake. Even though I did not feel a single thing (believe it or not) the most fascinating thing for me was everyone’s reactions after wards. Some people were calm and collected and chucked the whole thing up to a plane passing by or some type of rock fall somewhere, some felt scared and did not really know what to do so they just stood there and then there were the people who probably ran over the nearest pastor they could find as it was believed to be the end of days.

The Knee

On Thursday I had to do four hours on the road, but halfway through my route my left knee hurt so much that I had to turn around.  This is not the first time that I have experienced knee pain, but never to this extent. I even stopped for a few seconds, but when I started again my knee could hardly pedal and I still had a long way to go before I reached the gym.  I decided to keep on pedaling on an easy gear without putting pressure on the knee. 12 Km

The past week was a very difficult week.  Monday I didn’t train because of Sunday’s race so I helped a friend with her art expedition.  Tuesday I took the road and everything was fine.  Wednesday I had no energy so I didn’t go near the gym, but made a point of it to train on Thursday and to add more hills to my route.  Friday and Saturday I took it easy in preparing for Sunday’s race.  The weather on Saturday wasn’t a cyclist’s dream.  I decided that only if it rains I won’t race. Perceptions

It is a new week that with it brings new challenges. One challenge that my week has brought to my attention, which I would like to talk about, is perceptions. In many of my previous posts I have gone on and on about how your perceptions form your view of the world you live in, and if you want to live in a “different” world you have to perceive things differently. However, I have found that the flip side of this may also cause problems in the workplace and in relationships….what if people have a negative perception of you?

Yes, we can control our own emotions and thoughts but how do we control those of others? When someone things you are incompetent, or not good enough, or because of your depression can not optimally perform your tasks at work, what then?

Perceptions

I am sure most of you have heard of the death of funny man and actor Robin Williams. When I heard the news this morning I was truly shocked, he was always so happy this cannot possibly be true, but once again I realised this is my perception of a man I don’t even know. Sometimes the perceptions we have of others stop us from seeing their struggles.

When things go from bad to worse!

I have to admit that I have had the worst weekend, just when I thought things were looking up it got worse…..do you know the feeling?

This time of year many individuals start to feel the pressure and burn out starts to set in…There are non-stop deadlines that have to be met, constant pressure to perform, and absolutely no motivation for the last few months of the year. It is in this time that we have to start actively doing things to help us fight burn out. I choose this topic today, firstly because after my horrible weekend I realised that I am on the edge of burn out and to be honest it is scaring the living daylights out of me, this blah unmotivated feeling.
